How do you feed multiple horses bucket feeds in the field, without them trying to steal each others feed?
I know there’s lots of ways of doing this, but am looking for new ideas.
I was taught 2 ways to do it: put some buckets out there a distance away from each other so they won’t get confused or start fighting, OR get a large trough or two and put some grain in there enough for more than 2 horses.

put the buckets out…they will find them and they will eat…study your horses and see who spends more time where…when you put the food out put it near them…take it up after a certain time so they know that if they didn't eat they wont get anymore until next feeding…next time you put it out near them, they should immediately start eating from what you put next to them. They will be absorbed in their own buckets to think of someone elses

I TAKE BARELS AND CUT OUT SOME OF THE SIDES. PUT HAY IN THEM AND THEN SET THEM IN THE FEILD. IF THEY DON’T GO FOR IT AT FIRST ADD SOME TREATS INTO THE HAY IT WILL LURE THEM IN.

If there’s vegitation they will graze. Give them a liitle oats and alfalfa when they come in from the pasture

Where I come from usually when you feed horses you put the food in their mouth and they chew it and eat it. Hope this helps

Horses need to be fed individually to assure that they are getting their own food. If your horse eats another horse’s feed they can get stomach problems. I would take your horse out of the field, set the bucket down on the ground and let him eat on a lead rope, put him back, and do the next one, etc. Once you get them into a routine, they will line up readily at the gate for you.

well, we have the buckets lined up along the fence line, and we just go through and throw a scoop in each bucket, and the horses usually get to their bucket by the pecking order in the herd. The same horses are always at the first bucket and the same are alwasy at the last. Sometimes they steal food, but it doesn’t matter aslong as they are getting the same thing.

The only way I've ever seen it done without separating them is when they all eat the same feed, and some get well fed and others don't. Some very aggressive horses will even chase away several others from their buckets before they start to eat. They will continue to do this, going back and bolting feed in between. Obviously, this is not ideal. Even when the feed is placed in widely separated areas, the aggressive horses bolt their feed and steal from others. It's just asking for fights and injuries, not to mention some skinny timid horses who never get enough to eat. Feeding time can be the most dangerous time for horses kept in groups, since the aggression level rises whenever food is involved. Unless you are very lucky, and none of the horses involved have any aggressive tendencies, it's not the best idea. It can be done more successfully if only hay is being fed, as long as the piles are widely separated, since the aggressive horses can't spend all day chasing everyone, and hay takes some time to eat.
