How many bales of hay does a trail horse eat in a week?

Files under horse hay | Posted by admin

I do not have a horse yet; I'm trying to figure out how much money I need to feed a horse. I live in a desert, so I can't have any green pasture.

The rule of thumb for feeding horses is 1 lb of feed for every 100 lbs of body weight. The average 1000 lb trail horse should get 10 lbs of feed daily. If you are feeding exclusively hay, each flake is about 2 lbs, so about 4 flakes daily is adequate. Note if you are feeding any grain, you need to take this into account and decrease the amount of hay accordingly.
So for a week, that'd be about 28 flakes, or close to 2 full bales, depending on what type fo hay you are using and how big the bales are. Note that alfalfa hay weighs much more than grass hays by the flake so you'll need to adjust this a bit.

My 6 year old arab mare eats around 5 bales in a 7 day week. When it is cold, she eats about 6-7.

Actually, it depends on the horse and any other suppliments (oats, etc) you are offering. One horse can go through a ton of hay in one winter…each bale weighs about 80 pounds. Consider 12 to 16 weeks of ground cover that prevents the horse from grazing. 2000 divided by 80. Take your total and divide again by either 12 or 16 and you get a rough guestimate on how many bales a horse eats in a week.

    Hello,
Our two horses have 8 acres of pasture, we over feed (I no I no not good but dang they can not eat grass alone), of a half a bale of a grass mix and a good junk of alfalfa a day ……we adjust there feeding as to how there weight looks.
I am not into seeing our horses ribs and bones, yuk. If we tried to feed grain they would think we were poisoning them.
Hay costs a arm and leg these days…..

Hi there. It would depend on a lot of things. Does your horse have any grazing? Is he eating grain…if so what protein and fat content. If the hay you intend to feed is a high quality hay…alfalfa, timithy, coastal an average bale could last three or four days. However a grass hay or a mix you might need to feed half of a bale a day to get the same results. Also to take into consideration is your weather. If the climate is warm the horse needs less hay. But if you are in a cold climate then the intake of hay and grain must increase as well. Horses use body fat to keep warm. Therefore the colder the climate the more fat is used up. Their intake of food has to be equal or better or your horse will loose weight. I am sorry I could not give you an exact answer but hopefully this will help you out a bit.

My 4 horses split 2-3 40 lbs bales a day. I would say between 5-6 40lb bales. It is cold here so I give more depending on the weather. Hay will help them maintain body heat so it is nice if they have free choice. After doing this for a couple of days they will slow down consumption.

Heather's answer is accurate. W00t Heather!

My pony is predominantly a trail horse and he eats 1-2 bales a week depending on how cold it is.

In the summer he grazes the pasture and usually only needs 1 flake if any a day.

I have a horse and he can eat about 3 bales a week.. about 2 days per bale. however it depends on the size of the bale too. Sunny gets 4 flakes of hay a day plus grain.

My horses eat around 7 bales a week in the spring, summer and fall, because they go out to pasture. In the winter they get round bales, so it's harder to tell.

Edit : That's five horses eating 7 bales a week.

I have 4 full grow horses and I feed them two 50 pound bales a day. If i'm feeding rounds, I feed a 900 pound bale and that usually lasts around 2 weeks, mabee a little longer

Are you planning to pack for a week long riding trip? If so, I figure on a half bale per horse per day. When hubby rode, the two geldings got along well enough that I could put a full bale in a hay net between them, and they'd eat together with no problems. I usualy would put in one or two extra bales, just in case we decided to go out and do something instead of ride one day, so that if they were stuck in stalls they could have some extra hay.

our horses get four flakes a day, so that must be four bails a week.

It depends on the size of the horse and the size of the bale and the amount of work trailriding. It'll also depend on the weather, they need more hay in cold weather. Generally feed a horse 1.2 to 1.5% of its body weight in feed per day. If your horse weighs 1000 pounds, that'd be 12 to 15 pounds of feed each day. Exactly how much hay will depend on the quality and type of hay. You'd feed more grass hay, less alfalfa.
