And how many flakes are in an average bale of hay?
You figure on what hay you are feeding, grass vs alfalfa, then you figure your horses body weight, then you figure the weight in hay they need.

may i ask what you mean by, "flakes" ?

Does your horse get any grain/supplements? Is your horse out on pasture at all?
According to a recent study, a grown horse should eat about 12-15lbs of hay a day. That varies though, depending on their metabolism, breed, & how hard you are working them.
I feed 15 horses everday- here is what we do. They get their grain first thing in the morning & then I put them out to pasture. I put 2 flakes of hay out for each horse(spread out of course), and then come back 2 hours later and put 2 more flakes out for each horse. In the evening when I bring them in, they get 3-4 flakes, along with their grain.
So each horse gets a bit less then a bale a day.Our fields are all mud right now, so that is why we are feeding so much hay. In the summer they only get 2 flakes of hay when they come in at night. We prefer it if they just live off of the grass out there.

depends on your bale. On an average 60-80 lb bale, there are 10-14 flakes.
I feed our average horses with average activity levels 2-3 flakes of hay AM and PM with 2 lbs of sweet feed each time.
Horses that are ridden often or are growing may need 3 or more flakes morning and night
My rule of thumb is 1 bale per 4 horses per feeding (twice a day)

Well in all honesty, we need more information on your horse. How big is he?
What kind of activity is he doing?
Does he go out on pasture?
What kind of hay do you/would you give him?
For a square bale, there are usually around 14 flakes. For a round bale…they don't have flakes.
I have 18 horses
10 on are square bales of Jiggs
8 are on 5' round bales of Bahaia
We go through about 1.5 - 2 bales of Jiggs each day. Each horse gets about a flake of hay in the morning and a flake at night. A little more for the performance horses and bred mares. They go out to pasture for most of the day. At the ned of the day when they come in the performance horses get anywhere from half a can to 2 cans of strategy. Our stallion, who is 25, gets half a can of Senoir Feed. The growing colts get a can of Strategy while the pregnant mares get 3 cans.
The ones on bahaia get fed hay 3 times a day. We have a big wheel barrow and we fill it 2 times each feeding. It takes 2 weeks to go through a 5' bale. They are NOT on pasture and some of them are getting fat!
It really depends on what you are doing with your horse, the kind of hay, if he gets pasture, his size and whether or not he's an easy keeper.
