We bought a house and the barn is full of either hay or straw. It's all in bales. How do we know what one it is and if it is still good?

hay is usually green in color, and straw is usually yellow in color. typically if it has been stored in a barn, protected from the elements, it should be good for a couple of years, possibly longer.
