I have recently acquired many acres of flat land, growing fescue on it. Seems like such a waste to just mow it down since hay sells so high. What do you do to get started using this for hay?
The area is 40 acres, approximately.

And yes, we do have a tractor, a new one that came with a "bush hog" mower thing that we use to cut the grass down.

Tall Fescue does have a bad reputation and it's not recommended to pasture or feed the hay to gestating mares.
However, if the grass is cut before it matures it can be excellent feed for any other livestock.
Your brush hog won't work for making hay because it cuts everything into such fine pieces. You will need a mower, rake, or a swather will do both jobs, and a baler. You can usually find a local farmer who will do the haying for you on shares, which would probably be the best route for you to go.
