What does anyone think about this?

Files under hay delivery | Posted by admin

I just had two large round bales of grass/oat hay delivered. The bales were $88 each and he charged me $45 for gas for delivery. I wrote him a check and I must have been a little distracted. I had my 3 yr old 5 yr old and my 3 month old, boys with me.
He was suppose to come out at 10 in the morning and I had help rounded up to help me get the bales off the truck bed. He didn’t show up until 3 and my help had gone out of town. So I pushed these bales off by myself ,he stood and watched.
To get to the point I was looking at my bank statement and he cashed the check but I only wrote it out for 200. I figure he has my number and would have called if he thought he was under payed.

What does anyone else think. I think it was his fault he didnt look at the check before he left, knowing I was totally distracted by all that went on.

maybe he felt bad for making you push the 2 hail bails out by yourself and not helping so he decided not to charge you the extra $21 you owed him.

I say you got ripped enough already so don’t worry about it. I would have assumed delivery meant IN MY YARD, ON THE GROUND. He didn’t “deliver” the bales - he drove his truck with the loaded bales into your yard.

I pay $65 for very large bales of coastal bermuda, $5 more per bale for delivery. The farmer has a flatbed truck with a tilting bed that “dumps” the bales where I want them. His farm is only 20 minutes from my house though.

I would call him and say that you received your bank statement and noticed that you underpaid him. Tell him you apologize as you had the kids, were distracted etc. Ask him if he would like another check to make up the difference and if so, mail it or deliver it. That way, he gets the agreed price on the hay and you have a future supplier if needed.

Where I am from, hay is in very short supply at the moment and suppliers might not return your call if you short-change them once.

You might find that when you contact him, he will be happy that you noticed and will probably tell you not to worry about it.

I think you paid too much to begin with. Maybe that is the going rate where you are at. $45 also seems high to deliver 2 bales. I pay $20 for delivery. He should have looked at the check, but if he calls back a questions it, apologize and pay him the difference. Maybe he didn’t help you unload because that was all you paid him. I think he got enough. If my hay supplier charged me $88 dollars a bale, I wouldn’t pay him for delivery.
