You have got to be …
You have got to be kidding. Why are those the only 2 options?? Responsible horse owners seek medical treatment or have their horse humanely euthanized when one of the above conditions exist. Or just try feeding them, that does wonders for a starving horse. There are state laws protecting horses from this type of neglectful or abusive ownership and those are what need to be enforced consistently to get people to wake up and realize horses are a huge responsibility with certain needs.

    cowgirl…i more …
cowgirl…i more than agree. i have rescued 5 horses — but they all cant be saved. There are to many of them..they are all going to end up at sales, with no one to buy them. I think there needs to be a more humane way. Or, we could all stop breeding them! Al of horses are bred because someone thinks it would be a good idea. I do think that the whole thing is terrible…but there needs to be somewhere for them to go. You are going to see many more horses being abused and left to starve

ok, i might be the …
ok, i might be the only one to say this but if you do the math we can’t stop slaughter we need to make it humane. without it where are our surplus horses going to go? To people that are going to abuse them. There have already been cases of people turning their domesticated horses out into the forrest and they later died, i don’t know about you but this is not what i want to happen.

    Please, EVERYONE, …
Please, EVERYONE, take few moments to call your Congressional representative, and Senators. Urge them to get HR503,(in the Congress), and S311 (in the Senate), to the floor for a vote. Urge them to Co-Sponsor the bills and to press for a vote ASAP. Do this everyday, until this horror is ended.

Thank you for helping to save them.

I am quite aware of …
I am quite aware of what the Equine Advocate person was describing about horse abuse. Humane euthanasia is far different than horses sold at killer auctions who for the most part are young and healthy; they are are transported in a horrifying means to Mexico and Canada where they suffer a brutal death. The profit motive to sell the horses for consumption abroad denigrates the democratic principles we stand for as a nation.

    Just as they don’t …
Just as they don’t butcher “down cows”, they also don’t slaughter very sick, injured, or emaciated horses. The meat plants will not take poor quality horses. Over 70% of horses slaughtered are young, fit, healthy, and sound.

    horses thar are …
horses thar are injured to the point that can’t walk shoud be euthanized humanely

    I agree with the …
I agree with the overbreeding part. You do know that surogate mares are allowed? What about the cloning?Folks are barking up the wrong trees.

    There seem to be …
There seem to be more irresponible owners where I live that let their horses suffer anyway. There are alot of wrongs done to horses. How about that race world?

  16. dburrigh on September 27th, 2008 2:30 am

    Yes, it’s humane to …
Yes, it’s humane to pack a horse which cannot walk into a truck with other strange horses for a long journey from auction to auction.

Responsible horse owners call the vet when their horses get to the state you describe. I should know, I had to do it last year.

    In the 90s the # of …
In the 90s the # of US horses slaughtered declined sharply. According to USDA records345,700 horses were slaughtered for export in 1990; ten years later in 2000 that number was 50,400. The # of horses slaughtered yearly dropped by as many as 79,000 and there was no rash of unwanted horses.

    You know the old …
You know the old saying “If you want to play, you have to pay”?

The real problem is overbreeding, which groups like the American Quarter Horse n (a pro slaughter group) promote.

  19. horsewoman8948 on September 27th, 2008 2:30 am

    My point is, you …
My point is, you may have seen horrid slaughter house videos or you are just grossed out by the thought of someone eating a horse, but you have not seen the other side.Horses injured to the point they can’t walk, bleeding,in pain, starving.I have looked in their eyes and I would much rather they go to slaughter than suffer for the rest of their lives, months upon years.

  20. horsewoman8948 on September 27th, 2008 2:30 am

    I don’t have all …
I don’t have all the answers, but shutting down the slaughter houses at this time sure wasn’t it.There are folks who watch their horses suffer and die because they can’t afford the care or to put them down. You see they find these $50.00 horses a bargain.Others are turning their horses loose to fend for themselves.

  21. horsewoman8948 on September 27th, 2008 2:30 am

    That doesn’t sound …
That doesn’t sound bad for one horse, does it? It is estimated that 100,000 horses will be saved annually. The math: $3900.00 X 100,000 horses = $390,000,000.00.
I am all for saving horses, but I don’t keep that kinda cash in my matress.Note that is an annual estimate. Go to 5 years on that 390 mil. That’s 1,950,000,000.00, and so on.

  22. horsewoman8948 on September 27th, 2008 2:30 am

    Okay folks, I own …
Okay folks, I own horses, I don’t eat horses.I am pro slaughter. I have figured the cost of taking care of a horse properly (at the low end) and it is $3900.00 annually, that doesn’t include unexpected health problems, accidents or training.

  23. kpwpe on September 27th, 2008 2:30 am

    to Farmboy: If you …
to Farmboy: If you can’t afford to keep your horses until they die a natural death or are euthanized, then you shouldn’t own horses. It’s call “responsibility”.

How dare you use up your horse and then discard him or her like an old sweater. They are sentient beings that WORKED FOR YOU!

I guess we know your real name, i.e., Judas!

  24. dburrigh on September 27th, 2008 2:30 am

    On the “10000 head …
On the “10000 head of horses” remark.

I remember a fellow named Trent Loos was going to ship all the “unwanted, broken down horses” to Bo Derek (a supporter of the slaughter ban). He ended up with a bunch of stick horses since he had a difficult time rounding up real ones.

It just shows how the pro-slaughter side is all talk and no substance.

    Thank you so much …
Thank you so much Martha Stewart. My RESCUE & PMU horses are thanking you too for helping to spread the word about horse slaughter. Without people who cared, they would all have been dinner for some rich folk overseas! Donka Wonk sends a special donkey kiss to ya too (he a foster in my home too). We love ya!
