What are good brands of western horse tack?

Files under horse tack | 12 Comments »

i have wanted a horse for a while, and my parents are finally letting me get one. i am the most experienced person with horses in my family, but i have no idea what brand of tack to get! please help me!
links are appreciated, thanks in advance!
if it matters, i've taken western lessons on and off for 4 years

please think economically!!

For saddles: Crates, Circle Y, Martin are all good but economical.

For a headstall just find an inexpensive one that is made with GOOD quality leather. Doesn’t really need to be a brand name one.

Anyone have or know where I can get some horse tack that is no longer being used?

Files under horse tack | 8 Comments »

I am needing some tack to use in 4-H. If anyone has some used tack that they no longer need, let me know. There is no used tack shops anywhere around me unless I travel for atleast 2 hours, not many horse people in my area.

Try checking your local classifieds or craigslist.org

How to ride a horse tack less?

Files under horse tack | 4 Comments »

I have been riding my horse Star for many years. And I am riding her with a rope around the neck, I can gallop her, stop her, turn her perfectly. But I want to teach her how to ride with no rope, but how can I ride with no rope around the neck. Just with no tack?

Start to teach her to stop with your feet, like put you heels into her chest when you want her to stop, while stoping her with the rope.
Basically you want to teach her the cues you need with just your body while you still have the rope, and eventually you'll have her trained.

What's the cheapest way to carry all my horse tack???

Files under horse tack | 8 Comments »

I just got a new Saddle, Girth, Bridle, and Saddle Pad (all english) and i want to know the cheapest thing i can use to carry it all. (because i dont have horse, i take lessons, and i cant keep my tack where i take lessons) specific stores and/or sites are appreciated

easy- carry it by hand and keep it in your trunk, as long as the weather doesn't get too cold. I have never used anything to transport my tack, except if you would count a cheap saddle cover.

As for your bridle- only use it on one horse with a bit the horse is used to. If you switch around bits and bridles, you may get one that does not fit the horse correctly or make most of the lesson getting a horse used to a new bit instead of working on what lessons on school horses are supposed to do- work on you.
