Does straight Alfalfa hay attract more flies than alf/grass or grass hay?

Files under alfalfa hay | 2 Comments »

I've never had that problem. My flies like the horses or the molasses in the grain. Doesn't even have to have molasses…the flies just seem to like certain pelleted foods. And they will hang out in the feed trough if you've fed your horse grain in them. The saliva from your horse after eating grain is an attractant for flies.

But as for hay…never had problems with it alone. Don't think I even have flies in the hay part of my barn. Just where the grain has been dropped on the ground…and I use straight alfalfa, alfalfa grass, grass, and wheat hay.

Will the EZ unroller work with alfalfa hay?

Files under alfalfa hay | 2 Comments »

It was made by T. Whipple Simpson. The EZ unroller unrolls big bales and then rebales them into small square bales. Will this machine work with alfalfa and retain leaf without leaf loss?

my neighbor tried it on straw with good success, but it was still a little damp when he did. alfalfa on the other hand you would probably lose a lot of the leaves as you asked. I would try one and see what it does. sorry I couldn't help more good luck

What is the difference between Timothy and Alfalfa hay?

timothy hay is a grass a hay and can vary on the protein level depending on where is grown. alfalfa is your clover hay and protein levels will vary on where it is grown. we feed a mxture of grass and alfalfa. some alfalfa hay is very high depending where we get it from and can cause problems in horses if fed a lot of it all the time. especially in horses that are not being work daily, the more the horse is worked the easier it is for them to burn feed off . some feeds are to hot for idle animals ….we only feed grain when the ranch or rodeo horses are working heavy

Riders in SE Michigan (Oakland/Livingston/Genessee)?

Files under Michigan hay | 2 Comments »

I am new to the state (the country too) and was wondering if there were any potential horse friends hiding in my neck of the woods? I live in NW Oakland county (Milford/Fenton/Howell/South Lyon area) and would like to meet more people who smell like horses and have perpetual hay in their hair.

I tried craigslist, but people frightened me. :P Thanks!

Go to the MEL website. Michigan Equine Lovers…Meet some horse folk there from all around Michigan and they also set up camp dates, rides, weekend getaways and all…be careful though , some there do like to stir trouble. Have fun…

I want to catch a coyote that goes into a friend's barn & kills/eats the kittens.?

Files under dairy hay | 5 Comments »

My friend lives in PA on a dairy farm, and the cats and kittens live in the barn with the cows. The cats are there not only as pets, but also to help keep moles, etc, out of the hay meant for the cows. I do not like the thought of having to kill an animal, but I know in order to stop this from happening, that I will have to. Has anyone ever used a trap?

Yes my inlaws do it quite often. The trap works GREAT. Place some bait inside (Some sort of meat) and wait. You will soon catch that pesky rodent. Good luck!

The coyotes my inlaws have problems with eat their chickens and other small animals. The only way to stop it…. kill the thing. Sorry, but its the truth.

I need a make and a color scheme for an old horse drawn hay rake…..?

Files under horse hay | 2 Comments »

I have a side delevery, horse drawn hay rake. I want to restore it, but it has been in the woods so long that I don't know the maker of the rake let alone the color it was painted. I have found a bare trace of green paint on the body and of red on the wheels. Also all of the part numbers start with a 'z'. Some of the part numbers are: z-130, z-122, z-144, z-123.

Green and Red would be good, I say it would look older ..and not just the plain John Deere regular look of today.

What are good brands of western horse tack?

Files under horse tack | 12 Comments »

i have wanted a horse for a while, and my parents are finally letting me get one. i am the most experienced person with horses in my family, but i have no idea what brand of tack to get! please help me!
links are appreciated, thanks in advance!
if it matters, i've taken western lessons on and off for 4 years

please think economically!!

For saddles: Crates, Circle Y, Martin are all good but economical.

For a headstall just find an inexpensive one that is made with GOOD quality leather. Doesn’t really need to be a brand name one.
